
a story set in the 1500s doesnt need to be written in old shakespearean english). while i do want accuracy with historical fiction, i dont expect the writing to necessarily reflect the time period (ie. The thing that bothered me is how modern the story feels. amara is definitely a character worth rooting for. but in the midst of that brutal honesty, this is also a story about friendship and sisterhood, rising after hardships, the value of humanity and self-worth, and the price of freedom. i think it would have done a disservice to the story and characters had it been sugarcoated. this does not shy away from the blunt, violent, explicit living conditions of a brothel slave. The best thing this book has going for it is its candidness.
